Nuclear Medicine: Includes Total Body Bone Scans, 3 Phase Bone Scans, DISIDA Scan, Gastric Emptying, Gastrointestinal Bleed, Hemangioma, Infection Localization Indium Scan, Liver/Spleen scan, Meckels, MUGA Scan, Parathyroid Scan, Neotect Scan, Renal Scan with Captopril, Renal Scan with Lasix, and Thyroid/Uptake Scans


Pre-Exam Preparation and What to Expect from Your Exam

Total Body Bone Scan

No preparation is required

Patient arrives early in the morning and receives and injection of radioisotope, which takes approximately 5 minutes. The patient returns 2-3 hours later for the actual scan, which takes approximately 1 hour.

3 Phase Bone Scan

No preparation is required.

Patient arrives early in the morning and receives an injection of radioisotope and an initial scan is done, which takes approximately 30 minutes. The patient returns 2-3 hours later for the next phase of scanning.

DISIDA Scan Nothing to eat or drink for 4 hours before the exam
DISIDA Scan with Ejection Fraction Nothing to eat or drink for 4 hours before the exam
Gastric Emptying Nothing for eat or drink for 8 hours before the exam
Gastrointestinal Bleed No preparation is required
Hemangioma (tagged RBC) No preparation is required.

Images are taken at 1, 2, and 3 hours. Final image series takes 1.5 hours

Infection Localization Indium Scan No preparation is required.

Patient arrives early in the morning to have blood drawn. Patient returns in 3 hours for reinjection. Patient returns in 3-4 hours for scanning.

Liver/Spleen Scan No preparation required.

This exam cannot be performed with thyroid uptake

Meckels Nothing to eat or drink after midnight on the evening before the exam.
MUGA Scan No preparation is required.
Parathyroid Scan No preparation is required.

Patient arrives early in the morning for initial images. Patient returns for next series of images in 2-4 hours. Patient returns for final images in 4-6 hours.

Neotect Scan No preparation is required.

Patient arrives early in the morning and receives an injection of radioisotope, which takes approximately 5 minutes. The patient returns 2-3 hours later for the actual scan, which takes approximately 1 hour.

Renal Scan with Captopril No caffeine for 24 hours before the exam. Nothing to eat after midnight on the evening before the exam. Clear fluids are allowed up until the exam.
Renal Scan with Lasix No preparation is required.
Thyroid Scan/Uptake Scan Patient should not take thyroid medications for 4-6 weeks before the exam. Patient should not have x-ray dye for 90 days before this exam.
   

What happens after the exam?

Your exam will be interpreted by a board-certified radiologist with many years of training and professional experience. A report will be sent to your doctor within 24 hours and he or she will contact you with the results. Your physician will review your clinical history in conjunction with exam results to provide you with the most accurate diagnosis and optimal treatment plan.
